1. A decade ago was part of a meeting with multiple technology companies including CEO’s and other high level reps in the DC area regarding cell tower access and communications in a time of disaster. In a sidebar convo, one of the ideas that came up was the importance at ensuring cell towers were capable of being self powered for a long period of time in the event of a major power outage. The thought was that it was more important to have comms stay up so the authorities could keep communication going selectively if needed between themselves and the general population (where to go, what to do etc) than it was for the power grid to be up as they knew it would take the power grid a long time to be reestablished during an event. Keeping the comms going was considered more critical.
