04:05 may have had a bigger purpose than just
04:07 spying
04:09 again if if uh bigger than spying what
04:11 would that be steven
04:13 hunts hackers for a living back in
04:16 january in the corner of his eye
04:17 peripheral kind of way he thought he saw
04:20 one in his customers networks a shadowy
04:23 presence downloading emails adair is the
04:26 founder of a cyber security company
04:27 called velexity and he runs traps to
04:30 corner intruders all the time
04:32 so he he took a quick look at the server
04:34 his client was using to
04:36 run microsoft exchange and he was
04:39 stunned to see quote requests that we’re
04:42 not expecting he said there were
04:44 requests for access to specific email
04:47 accounts uh requests for confidential
04:50 files it said he followed all of this
04:53 requested information to a virtual
04:55 server off site and it said the hair is
04:58 almost rising on my arms right now when
04:59 i think about it adair told npr later he
05:02 said quote this feeling of like oh crap
05:05 this is not what should be going on
05:09 yeah i’m sure that’s exactly what he
05:11 said
05:12 uh it said what a dare discovered was a
05:14 massive hack into microsoft exchange one
05:17 of the most popular email software
05:19 programs in the world for nearly three
05:22 months intruders helped themselves to
05:24 everything from emails to calendars to
05:27 contacts they went wild and launched
05:29 some second wave
05:31 of attacks to sweep exchange data from
05:33 tens of thousands of unsuspecting
05:36 victims and they hit mom and pop shops
05:38 dentists office school districts local
05:41 governments all in a brazen attempt to
05:43 vacuum up information it says both the
05:46 white house and microsoft have said
05:48 unequivocally that chinese government
05:50 backed hackers are to blame
05:52 so we see this a lot where it’s you know
05:55 the russian hackers but it’s not the
05:56 russian government or at least they say
05:58 you know we can guarantee it’s from
06:00 russia but we can’t you know we can’t
06:02 say if it’s supported by the government
06:04 uh this one is the chinese government or
06:06 i’m sorry the chinese uh hackers but we
06:09 can’t guarantee they’re from you know
06:11 the chinese government but in both cases
06:13 you’re pretty much like if this is true
06:15 then it would be one of those right it
06:17 would be the chinese government or be
06:18 the russian government or it would be
06:20 the us government it would be the
06:22 three-letter agency starts with the c
06:24 and ends with an a
06:25 again npr’s months-long examination of
06:28 the attack
06:29 based on interviews from dozens of
06:31 players from company officials to cyber
06:32 forensic experts to u.s intelligence
06:35 officials found that stealing emails and
06:38 intellectual property may only have been
06:40 the beginning officials believe that the
06:42 breach was in the service of something
06:45 bigger china’s artificial intelligence
06:47 ambitions the beijing leadership aims to
06:50 lead the world in a technology that
06:52 allows computers to perform tasks that
06:54 are traditionally required uh human
06:57 intelligence such as finding patterns
06:59 and recognizing speech or faces
07:02 so supposedly part of this was ai what
07:04 do you think about this dex is first uh
07:06 you’ve been in tech companies and
07:08 understand how how these things work
07:10 like
07:11 what do you think this is all about
07:14 so yeah it certainly makes sense i mean
07:15 when you think about them pulling tons
07:17 and tons of data and it’s not just data
07:20 that’s in databases this is
07:21 communications right this is all of
07:23 these conversations between
07:25 uh people via email business settings
07:27 between these people and those people
07:28 that’s all information that can be fed
07:30 into an ai platform so it can learn more
07:33 or it can learn more about what may be
07:35 going on in a particular business or a
07:37 particular sector of businesses
07:39 and then how to turn around and use that
07:41 right what can be mined from it the
07:42 other thing to think about here is in
07:44 addition to whether or not there’s an ai
07:45 layer here there’s this entire data
07:48 collection model right so if you think
07:50 about this country and these hackers are
07:53 building this database of as many people
07:55 as they know their log by capturing this
07:57 data from companies those are people
07:59 behind it right every single email in
08:01 there is a human so they’re capturing
08:03 all of that and flagging it and tagging
08:05 it and adding it on to their database of
08:07 all of these people which we know and
08:08 it’s been reported before that they have
08:10 built a huge database of all of the
08:12 people in america and around the world
08:14 for that matter
08:15 do you think that part of that is is
08:17 what they’ve done with uh companies like
08:19 tick tock and other apps that they have
08:22 mining information
08:24 absolutely like the old face uh what was
08:26 that face face
08:28 yeah and then tick tock and all of them
08:30 that you know collecting all of that
08:31 data and even getting data from big tech
08:33 which i’m sure they have
08:35 inroads to and and have accessibility to
08:38 and have partnered with getting that
08:40 data and being able to mine it and turn
08:42 it into something that’s usable for them
08:44 so that they know
08:45 who they’re dealing with or what they’re
08:47 dealing with when they’re dealing with
08:48 people in another country or
08:49 specifically
08:51 a group of people or even trying to do
08:53 things like create
08:54 a false narrative and how do i get
08:56 people to get on board with it who are
08:57 the right people i need to get to
09:00 you know jump on this bandwagon that my
09:02 million you know bot army is going to
09:04 come out and start uh creating a viral
09:06 message about right and if you don’t
09:08 know what the he’s speaking about or if
09:11 you’re new here uh we covered that
09:13 china the actual government has over a
09:16 million on the payroll uh their specific
09:19 purpose is to run kind of accounts
09:22 that can sway things so these are real
09:25 people that are employed by the chinese
09:26 government and who knows maybe each one
09:28 of them has three accounts or four
09:30 accounts uh you know some places like
09:32 you know twitter per i you know ip or
09:35 whatever they can have two twitter
09:36 accounts maybe each one of these have
09:37 two twitter accounts that whenever you
09:40 know anything that’s negative they
09:42 downvote it or make sure that they uh
09:45 you know i guess counter it with
09:46 something or if there’s something they
09:49 do want you know pushed up to the very
09:51 beginning or trending they can do that
09:53 in an instant if you have one million
09:55 people
09:56 all pushing something and they all have
09:57 a vpn putting themselves all over the
09:59 world they can put anything to trending
10:02 which means they can control the flow of
10:04 information and if you control the flow
10:06 of information you control the world
10:08 uh honestly they have i believe they
10:10 have more employees than we do as far as
10:12 propaganda uh style so
10:14 i mean think about it uh think about
10:16 what’s happening right now i mean are
10:18 they uh who’s who’s really running the
10:20 show right now
10:22 it says there is a long-term project
10:24 underway said kirsten tote who is the
10:26 executive director of the um
10:28 administration’s bipartisan commission
10:30 on cyber security and now runs the cyber
10:32 readiness institute it says quote we
10:34 don’t know what the chinese are building
10:36 but what we do know is the diversity of
10:39 data quality of data aggregation
10:42 accumulation of data is going to be
10:44 critical to its success
10:47 so something is going on obviously
10:50 there is something bigger than just
10:52 getting your social security number and
10:53 identity theft
10:55 uh this is something
10:56 there’s something massive on the horizon
10:58 that’s my opinion what’s yours i’d love

12:02 and pay attention to that stuff

12:07 we follow the news so closely and follow
12:10 it so many different directions

84:15 so forth that was used as a morgatory

102:33 fighting for my brother’s life and so
