Drones launched by Ukraine entered Russian territory, with one getting within 100 kilometers of Moscow, indicating flaws in Russian defenses, leading to President Vladimir Putin ordering increased border protection. The attacks on Monday and Tuesday morning caused no injuries or significant damage but raised questions about Russian defense capabilities. Although Ukrainian officials did not claim responsibility, they emphasized Ukraine’s right to hit any target in Russia. On the same day as the drone attacks, Ukraine targeted several areas in southern and western Russia, and authorities closed the airspace over St. Petersburg in response to reports of a drone.
On the same day, Russian TV warned of a missile attack that officials blamed on hackers. According to local Russian authorities, the drone attacks targeted the border with Ukraine and further into the country. According to Andrei Vorobyov, governor of the surrounding region, a drone fell close to Gubastovo, which is less than 100 kilometers from Moscow. Vorobyov stated that the drone did not cause any damage, but it likely targeted a “civilian infrastructure object.” Pictures of the drone revealed a small Ukrainian-made model with a range of up to 800 kilometers. Still, they could not carry a sizeable explosive load.
Russian forces reportedly shot down another Ukrainian drone over the Bryansk region, according to local Gov. Aleksandr Bogomaz. Three drones targeted Russia’s Belgorod region, with one crashing through an apartment window in the capital. Local authorities reported that the drones caused minor damage to buildings and cars. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that Ukraine drones attacked facilities in the Krasnodar region and neighboring Adygea. They also reported that the drones were brought down by electronic warfare assets, with one crashing into a field and the other missing its intended target.
Russian commentators described the attacks as Ukraine trying to demonstrate its ability to strike deep into Russia and foment tensions and rally the Ukrainian public. Some Russian war bloggers speculated that the raids were rehearsals for a larger and more ambitious attack. Commentator Andrei Medvedev warned that the drone strikes could be a precursor to more significant attacks inside Russia, signaling Ukraine’s attempt to launch a counteroffensive. Russia hawks called for strong retaliation, with retired military officers Igor Korotchenko and Viktor Alksnis calling for a punishing strike on the presidential office in Kyiv.
Authorities reported that airspace around St. Petersburg was closed, halting all departures and arrivals at Pulkovo, the city’s main airport. Although officials did not provide a reason for the closure, some Russian reports speculated that it was due to an unidentified drone. The Russian Defense Ministry later announced that it was conducting air defense drills in western Russia.
